Hard To Study In The Wild
Little is known about African grey parrots in the wild because their secretive, predator-wary behavior makes them extremely difficult to observe. They move quietly through dense forest canopy, often staying high in the trees where visibility is limited. Greys also travel long distances to find fruiting trees, which makes tracking them challenging. Researchers rely heavily on acoustic surveys, local knowledge, and occasional sightings to piece together their natural behavior. Even with modern tools, much of their social structure, daily movement, and communication in the wild remains poorly documented. This knowledge gap is part of why so much of what is known about grey parrot intelligence instead comes from captive research, where behavior can be observed closely and consistently over time.
