Black Mamba

Where Black Mambas Live

Continent: Africa

Savannas, rocky hills, woodlands, and lowland forests across sub-Saharan Africa, from the southeast up to the Horn of Africa and west to Namibia and Angola.

The black mamba is Africa's longest venomous snake and among the fastest snakes on the planet, capable of short bursts near 20 km/h. Its name comes not from its skin, which is olive-brown to grey, but from the ink-black interior of its mouth. Though widely feared as one of the world's deadliest snakes, it's naturally shy and prefers fleeing over fighting. It thrives across savannas, woodlands, and rocky hillsides throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
