Where Common Green Darners Live

Continent: North America

Ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving streams across southern Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central America, also found in the Caribbean and parts of Asia.

The common green darner is one of North America's largest and most recognizable dragonflies, instantly identified by its bright green thorax and long, needle-like abdomen, which inspired its common name. Found from southern Canada down through Mexico and even into parts of the Caribbean and Asia, it's an exceptional aerial predator capable of catching prey mid-flight with remarkable precision. It's also one of the few truly migratory dragonfly species, completing an extraordinary multi-generational journey across the continent each year. Its scientific name, meaning "lord of June," reflects the commanding presence this powerful flyer holds over the ponds and wetlands it patrols.
