Near Extinction in 1927
After the last wild European bison was killed in 1927, the entire species survived only because fifty‑four individuals remained scattered across zoos and private collections. These few animals became the foundation for every bison alive today.
Conservationists coordinated breeding programs, tracked bloodlines, and worked to prevent inbreeding as much as possible. Without this global effort, the species would have vanished completely.
The recovery of the European bison is considered one of the most remarkable wildlife rescue stories in modern conservation.
