A Kingfisher That Doesn't Fish
Kookaburras are among the largest kingfishers, yet the laughing kookaburra seldom fishes. Adults measure 41 to 47 cm (16 to 19 in). Its diet is mostly land prey: insects, worms, snails, small mammals, frogs, lizards, and snakes, including venomous ones. In Australia, snakes and other reptiles make up about one third of what it eats, though it will take small fish, including goldfish from garden ponds. It hunts with the classic perch-and-pounce method, waiting motionless on a branch or wire, watching the ground, then swooping down to seize prey in its large, powerful bill. Hunting on land rather than in water lets the species live in woodland and forest across eastern Australia, wherever there are suitable trees, and it now also lives in places where it was introduced, such as Tasmania and New Zealand.
