Where Lions Live

Continent: Africa, Asia

Savannas, grasslands, shrublands, and semi deserts across sub-Saharan Africa, with a single wild population surviving in and around the Gir Forest of Gujarat, India.

The lion is one of the most iconic and recognizable big cats in the world, famous for the male's dramatic mane and its title as the only truly social wild cat species. Found primarily across sub-Saharan Africa, with a single remaining wild population in India's Gir Forest, lions live in cooperative family groups called prides. Long dubbed the "King of the Beasts," lions rely heavily on teamwork, with females doing most of the hunting while males defend pride territory. Once found across much of the world, lion numbers have fallen sharply, with roughly 23,000 to 39,000 individuals remaining across Africa today.
