A quokka sits upright on a speckled grey paved ground, holding a tiny piece of green and orange fruit or leaf in its front paws. It features dense, golden-brown grizzled fur, rounded ears, dark eyes, and a slight upward curve at its mouth giving it a smiling expression.

Where Quokkas Live

Continent: Australia

Rottnest Island and isolated forest pockets of southwestern Western Australia — the vast majority live on Rottnest Island, just off the coast of Perth.

The Quokka is widely known as the world's happiest animal thanks to its permanent smile - actually a result of its jaw structure for panting in the heat. Found mainly on Rottnest Island, quokkas are unusually friendly toward humans, making them famous for selfies with tourists. But behind the smile is a vulnerable species whose mainland populations have collapsed due to foxes, feral cats, and habitat loss.
