Where Red-Crowned Cranes Live

Continent: Asia

Wetlands, marshes, and rice fields across Hokkaido (Japan), northeastern China, southeastern Russia, and Mongolia; migratory populations winter in Korea and coastal China.

The red-crowned crane, also called the Japanese or Manchurian crane, is one of the rarest cranes in the world and a powerful cultural symbol of longevity and fidelity across East Asia. Instantly recognizable by the patch of bright red skin on its crown, it stands as one of the tallest and heaviest crane species alive. Famous for elegant, synchronized courtship dances, it forms lifelong monogamous pairs. With wetland habitat shrinking across its range, it remains one of the most endangered large birds in Asia.
