A Cancer That Spreads Like a Cold
Devil Facial Tumor Disease is one of the few contagious cancers known to science, and it spreads between Tasmanian devils through biting during fights or feeding. Once transmitted, tumors grow rapidly around the face and mouth, making it difficult for infected devils to eat.
The disease is almost always fatal, and its fast spread caused dramatic population declines across Tasmania. Conservation teams have worked to isolate healthy groups, develop vaccines, and manage breeding programs to protect the species.
The disease remains one of the most serious wildlife health crises in modern conservation.
